Introduction Paraffin-based fuel for hybrid rockets is environment friendly and exhibits sufficiently high regression rate. It is established that melted paraffin is atomized by high-speed oxidizer flow. Then the fuel droplets quickly burn. To model the combustion processes the data on burning characteristics of alkanes are required. So the experimental investigation of single droplets and droplets arrays is pressing question. Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate burning characteristics of n-alkanes droplets (Ñ18Í38 and Ñ22Í46), flame propagation in double droplet system, to define ignition delay time and critical inter-droplet spacing. Method The paper presents the experimental investigation on burning rates of single droplets (octadecane and docosane) as well as double droplets system. A special set up was built to study geometric characteristics of burning droplets and flames by two digital cameras. Video-files are processed to obtain droplet squared diameter and flame height histories Results Burning rate constants of n-octadecane and n-docosane droplets are defined. It is found that Kbur of octadecane exceeds the docosane’s one in 1.5 times. The conditions of the second droplet ignition by the burning one are found in case of horizontal droplets disposition and vertical one. The ignition delay time is defined as function of inter-droplet spacing. Maximum value of inter-droplet space is measured when flame propagation is possible. |
