Abstracts:

The paper presents a detailed analysis of the specifics of gas production from shale rock, primarily in the economic and technological aspects. It is discussed one of the most challenging issues in modern practice of shale gas production - economics of projects and financial instruments that are actively used by companies in the sector in order to reduce their risk, which suggests the development of a new type of economics of hydrocarbons production. By using optimization modeling techniques the scenario calculations of possible world shale gas productions volumes were made: a baseline scenario (assumes the preservation of current trends), an optimistic ‘Shale breakthrough’ scenario, which involves rapid development and replication of shale gas extraction technologies, and the ‘Shale failure’ scenario suggesting a sharp negative review of shale gas reserves and resources estimates and lifetimes of shale plays together with significant environmental and technological constraints.
